As Scientific Director of Ocean Tracking Network (OTN), Dr. Robert Lennox’s work takes him across Canada to support researchers, ocean technology companies, ocean industry, and governments to observe the ocean in ways that have never before been possible. Ocean Tracking Network is a Major Research Facility headquartered at Dalhousie University that operates and maintains a unique scientific infrastructure to make observations about the ocean.
OTN maintains a network of acoustic receivers across Canada and around the world to collect and store billions of detections of tagged animals from the ocean and freshwater ecosystems. OTN also operates a fleet of autonomous vehicles to take measurements at sea. In the Dalhousie Department of Biology, Rob leads MER, a research group using electronic tagging and tracking technologies to better understand Atlantic salmon, mackerel, whitefish and other species in the context of ocean urbanisation and climate change.
As Canada prepares to grow its blue economy in the offshore and Arctic, Rob’s work with OTN and Dalhousie is ensuring that Canada has the capabilities and expertise to support world-leading research and sustainable development from coast to coast to coast.
